Weekly News Bulletin: Convention of Ocaña, and Regional Updates

OCAÑA: This week’s news bulletin comprises major updates about the beginning of the Convention of Ocaña, and local updates from Ecuador, New Granada and Venezuela. 

Governors and Intendants from provinces around the Republic of Colombia, all included in the delegation of the convention of Ocaña, have travelled to Ocaña this week. They will participate in the Convention, which begins today. Delegates are expected to undertake the drafting of a new constitution, which will govern the Republic of Gran Colombia. They will also attempt to resolve political tensions in the various regions of the Republic at the Convention. Sources report that major political disagreement between Federalists and Centralists can be expected at the Convention of Ocaña. 

Meanwhile, Venezuela was able to succeed in fighting against guerrilla bandits, which had been causing disruption in the province last month. Venezuelans cornered the bandits in El Durado, and the bandits have now retreated. In the region of New Granada, racial tensions that had been growing increasingly violent last month, peaked with the public lynching of Tornio Peinado. While racial tensions persist, the violence has largely eroded, and protests discouraged. Citizens belonging to mixed-race families project are known to be losing hope in the liberal project of Gran Colombia. In Ecuador, troops have entered a stalemate at the Peruvian border. The province has declared the Peruvian border conflict largely resolved. However, increased military presence on the Peruvian side of the border remains unchanged.
